As a consumer, understanding what processes are used to keep you and your loved ones’ food safe must be a priority. While you may not be taking part in the testing, having the knowledge about what goes into keeping your food at its best and what leak detection equipment is used is absolutely necessary. Don’t let yourself be caught unawares when it comes to what you put in your body. Here are four techniques used by professionals that help check for leaks in your food packaging today.
1. Ultrasonic Measurements
When you have a small leak in packaging, the human eye and ear usually won’t be enough to catch it. That’s why experts use smaller leak detection equipment, including machines with headphones and meters that can pick up the high frequency sound that a leak will produce. Not only will they be able to identify that a leak is present, they’ll be able to give professionals an idea of the size and rate of the leak, which enables them to quickly take care of the problem.
2. Bubble Test
This leak test is actually so simple that you could easily perform it at home yourself. Simply submerge the package in water, and watch to see if the change in pressure forces out any bubbles from the packaging. Your food should be completely sealed; so, if you notice any bubbles at all, it means there was a leak which allowed air to enter, leaving your food corrupted and unsafe to consume. Why risk getting sick when there’s such a simple detection method available?
3. Pressure Testing
In this method, professionals will charge the packaging to a set pressure level. The pressure will then be monitored over a specific amount of time to see if any serious changes occur. If the pressure is lowered over time, it will mean that the packaging does, in fact, have a leak and can therefore not be trusted.
4. Helium Sniff
This procedure requires experts to use a helium sniffer to detect the helium in a given space. The test will place pressurized helium into the food packaging, which will then be scanned by the sniffer in order to detect if any helium leaks out. This is a relatively advanced testing method and is probably one of the most secure when it comes to keeping your food safe.
